Experimental Design

I will investigate which type of soap best removes black sharpie from a white t-shirt. I will conduct my experiment at my house because it is the easiest place to find a time. I am the only person involved in my experiment. I will perform the experiment, take the data, and observe what happens. I will need two trials to have enough information for a reliable conclusion. When I am conducting my experiment I will be entering the data straight into the computer. To document the process I will take pictures of every trial.

Materials List

A white t-shirt
A black fine point Sharpie marker
A bar of soap
A bottle of hand soap
A bottle of dish soap
A bottle of laundry soap
A bowl of water
A sponge

Detailed Procedure

  1. Gather all materials
  2. Draw five lines of equal size and length with the Sharpie on the t-shirt
  3. Apply bar soap on one line on the t-shirt for a total of 10 rubs
  4. Apply one squirt of hand soap on a different line and rub 10 times
  5. Apply one squirt of dish soap on another line and rub 10 times
  6. Apply one cap full of laundry soap on the a line (leaving one as the control) and rub 10 times
  7. Take a sponge full of water from the bowl and rinse out all the soap on the t-shirt
  8. Put the t-shirt in the dryer and take out when dry
  9. Compare the fade of the Sharpie lines
